There is a lot of focus on generating more energy. We should look in to making the present energy consuming lights to be more efficient. Can any one tell me about the initiatives by the government for the development of LED lights - which consumes lesser power and lasts much longer.

Yes, there was initiatives by the government for the development of LED lights in our country most especially the signing of the Republic Act 9513 that was just been signed by President Arroyo these December but unfortunately implementation would take place by June. The primary issue regarding LED Lights was the cost of the product which is 3-5 times much higher than ordinary bulbs in the market. You know our countrymen will buy the much cheaper ordinary christmas lights which can lasts for a few days and burn houses at 3 sets for 100 pesos than buy LED christmas lights that are much higher at 1000 pesos/set at leading supermarkets. Another thing was that since LED products was still imported and too many taxes was inputed to the product before it goes to the consuming public such as Customs Duties which should be 1% only but our Customs charged more plus VAT, and if you are a distributor here plus VAT to BIR.

This is like the story of Penny wise and pound foolish.
An edison bulb costs USD 0.5 but it will consume 80% more energy than LED bulb. In the first place if we buy an LED lamp investment is high but the pay back period (roi) is less than 1 year.
